Meet the April 2019 Students of the Month
ON-CAMPUS STUDENT: Kayla Reid
Kayla is a senior, Organizational Leadership and Communication Sciences and Disorders major from Lyons, Kansas. On-campus, Kayla serves as a Herndon Clinic Undergraduate Student Clinician, Kelly Center Volunteer Peer Assistant, University Activities Board member, National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association member, National Society of Leadership and Success member, Peer Academic Leader for "Let's Talk" Learning Community, Leadership Studies Shadow Day mentor, Live. Learn. Lead. Learning Community Member, Learning Community Ambassador for First Year Experience and a Residence Hall Association member. Kayla also enjoys crafting, painting, baking, spending time with friends and family, and shopping. Kayla chose to get involved with the department because she was involved in the L3 learning community her freshman year. Her favorite class has been LDRS 670, Leadership and Personal Development, because she learned a lot about herself and how to strive to become better in any setting, professional and personal. Also, she has gained confidence in her public speaking abilities Kayla mentions "I think each new chapter of my life will benefit from anyone of my leadership courses and look forward to applying my knowledge in the future," Congratulations, Kayla!
VIRTUAL STUDENT: Kim Rhoades
Kim is a MPS Graduate student from Topeka, KS. Kim is currently volunteers for Silverbackks which feed the poor within the community. Outside of school, Kim likes to spend time with her family and play volleyball. She got involved with Leadership because she wanted to learn more in the field of leadership to grow within her current organization. The classes she has taken thus far, have taught her so much in regards to leadership, which she would not have been exposed to without furthering my career journey through FHSU Leadership Studies. She feels that once she has graduated with her degree, she can use the education to implement with the department she currently resides in and help other leaders. Kim's favorite leadership class in LDRS 677: Leadership and Personal Development. Kim mentioned that "As a leader, you must know your strengths and weaknesses in order to grow. It teaches you to go outside your comfort zone and dig deeper into what you need to work on personally. Our professor always encouraged us to talk about topics that led to deep conversations. Everyone was so nice and responsive to the topics which made you feel complete." Congratulations, Kim!
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT: Wei (Jack) Wang (Sias)
Jack is a junior from Xinyang, Henan majoring in Finance. Jack is working to improve himself and learn as much as possible from all of his coursework. He is involved in the Youth Volunteer Association and serves as a dormitory director. Outside of school, he likes to travel and participate in charity activities. He enjoys helping young children that lack education because they deserve an equal chance to be happy and successful. Jack became involved with the department because he wanted the chance to learn more and enhance his experiences. His favorite leadership class has been LDRS 310, Fieldwork in Leadership Studies. He mentioned that "it provides an opportunity to act in society, to experience society, and to implement projects he wants to do. Practice might be the best way to learn." Congratulations, Jack!
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT: Xu (Cinders) Liu (SNU)
Cinders is a junior from Shenyang, Liaoning majoring in Organizational Leadership. He is involved in the writing center in the Center for International Business and service learning projects. In fact, his team focused on the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 7 called Environmental Sustainability. He enjoys singing songs, running, swimming, reading novels, Chinese chess, Gobang, and playing badminton. Cinders became involved with the department because "it's a good opportunity, which can fulfill and further my leadership skills by the programs and academic courses. It can shape me to be a mature and potential leader after graduation when I am facing different industries." His favorite leadership class has been LDRS 450, Advanced Leadership Behaviors. He mentioned that "this course gives a systematic summary of al the leadership skills and behaviors that I have learned before. The leadership behavior can deeply help me understand and apply them in my future career. However, my ambition is to be a good civic leader who can do something for changing the social issues, serving the community, and making some difference around the world. So, leadership skills are piled up like bricks, and eventually I can achieve high performance as spectacular as high-rise buildings." Congratulations, Cinders!
